According to this article from the New York Times the number of migrants detained for trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border has dropped dramatically year over year from 2008 to 2009. The article provides an unbiased analysis of the possible reasons behind this drop in border crossing, providing both the Democratic and Republican voices of the argument. Democrats seem to be using the drop in immigration, which according to them is the result of overall better border security, as an opportunity to push a needed overhaul of the current immigration policy including giving “legal status to over 11 million illegal immigrants.” Republicans on the other hand view the drop in immigration much differently, calling it a result of the economic downturn the U.S. has and is still currently facing.
In my opinion, the drop in illegal immigrants crossing the border is most likely a result of tougher border security and a struggling economy. While I have no doubt that those here illegally are a contributing part of the economy and society as a whole, I’m unsure that providing amnesty to those currently here illegally is the right move. In the same breath, we must, as a country make the process of becoming a legal citizen a more viable option for those looking to make a better life for themselves in the U.S.
Immigration is obviously an issue, and reform is needed, but lets take our time and get it right.
