Every year Catholics around the country unite on one specific issue regarding the nations and their lives. With these post cards they solicit their representatives in Washington to enact the change they advocate for. In the past it has been issues like abortion and euthanasia. However this year it is immigration. The Catholic Church backed by the highest ranking officials of the institution began a lobbying campaign for 2010 about immigration. They call for things like ” regularize the status of an estimated 12 million people in this country illegally and restore due process protections for immigrants (,)” according to Catholic News Service Reporter Nancy Frazier O’Brien.
Is this the place of a major religious institution to be interfering with strictly foreign policy issues? Catholicism, as a religion, holds a lot of Hispanic members which are the main target of the immigration controversies in the United States. With that said I still do not believe that it is a religious institution, whichever one, to be meddling in public policy issues.
